Building codes
In 2008, the State of California adopted the revised 2007 California Building Code, which is based on the International Building Code model. The Uniform Building Code is no longer used as a model by the State but can be kept for archival and historical purposes. The current edition of the California Building Code adopted by the City includes the following main Parts:
California Administrative Code, Part 1
California Building Code, Part 2, Volumes 1 and 2
California Electrical Code, Part 3
California Mechanical Code, Part 4
California Plumbing Code, Part 5
California Energy Code, Part 6
California Green Building Standards Code, Part 11
The City adopted the 2006 International Property Maintenance Code for property maintenance enforcement and two other codes, which are not used as often: 2006 Uniform Solar Code Energy Code, and the 2006 International Existing Building Code, Appendix Chapters A3, A4 and A5 (Voluntary). The City Clerk office has a complete set of the above codes.
The State revises the Building Code triennially. The next code change will occur on January 1, 2011, when all of the California codes will be updated and republished as the 2010 California Building Code. They can be purchased from the International Code Council (ICC) or other authorized booksellers that carry code books. A full set of the main codes costs more than $1000, which is a consideration when purchasing a set of codes that will only be in effect for another 16 months.
