Every student in every grade is required to read the two (2) novels listed below over the summer break. Please note that even if students have read these novels before, they will need to re-read them to be properly prepared for the first weeks of school!

9th Grade Introduction to Genres & Composition (College Prep. & Honors):
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee & Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury

10th Grade World Literature (College Prep. & Honors):
Cry, the Beloved Country by Alan Paton & The Life of Pi by Yann Martel

11th Grade, American Literature & A.P. Language & Composition:
One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest by Ken Kesey & The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison

12th Grade British Literature & A.P. British Literature & Composition:
Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein & Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse Five

These novels are widely available at bookstores like Barnes & Noble and Borders.Cheaper, used editions are available online from stores like Amazon.com. Students
need personal copies as they will annotate, or write in, the novels during class.Students are encouraged to take notes while reading, but may not use them on the test.Students must bring both novels to the first day of class. The teacher will administer an objective test and/or an in-class writing assignment within the first two weeks of school to
assess the student’s understanding of the plot, literary elements, and themes within the novel. These grades will comprise the bulk of the student’s grade for the first six-week progress report.
